dubstep? no, thanks!

Adult Swim & Scion A/V team up to release a new compilation of mostly unreleased unclassified tunes, featuring new tracks from Kode9, Actress, Zomby, SBTRKT, Pinch and others. Download/stream here.

On a similar note, James Blake pretty much summed up this gross misnomer that American music journalists throw around called "dubstep" (i.e., wobble wobble wobble) in an interview yesterday from the Boston Phoenix, and I cannot agree with him more:

"[T]he dubstep that has come over to the US, and certain producers — who I can't even be bothered naming — have definitely hit upon a sort of frat-boy market where there's this macho-ism being reflected in the sounds and the way the music makes you feel. And to me, that is a million miles away from where dubstep started. It's a million miles away from the ethos of it. It's been influenced so much by electro and rave, into who can make the dirtiest, filthiest bass sound, almost like a pissing competition, and that's not really necessary. And I just think that largely that is not going to appeal to women. I find that whole side of things to be pretty frustrating, because that is a direct misrepresentation of the sound as far as I'm concerned."

It's like listening to Dude Ranch in '96 and thinking that shit's punk.

  1. That Unclassified comp. is fucking cool!

Yeah, I agree with Blake's points, even though I don't really like his music all that much. His newer stuff, like that are EP, are growing on me, but I didn't care for his album all that much. I thought it was pretty boring. Maybe his strengths are in shorter EPs and singles, who knows? What the fuck do I know, I guess?
